As far as photography is concerned, some people assume that they have to be experts in every aspect of this field. But nobody should believe that they have to like, know, and understand all types of photography in order to be a success in this business.
You may have a passion for photography for a wide variety of reasons. Maybe you take pictures and use them to create sequin backdrops for birthday parties, corporate events, and other reasons. Or maybe you got into photography to take family portraits.
No matter what your reasons happen to be, just know that it is possible to discover your niche without mastering every aspect of taking pictures.
With that said, we will now take a look at different ways you can go about discovering your photography niche. So pay attention and read on to find out more.
Obviously, if you’re going to be a photographer it makes sense to have a basic working knowledge of the fundamentals in this field. As an example, if you’re going to become a cook, you’ll want to know about all of the different types of cooking, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to cook with every single style.
The same holds true for photography. It definitely helps to know and be able to apply all of the fundamentals including capturing emotion and movement, focus, finding the right lighting, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to name a few. Nevertheless, just because you’ll have a basic understanding of all these different niches, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to use all of them. In fact, you’ll probably pick one or two different niches and stick to them.
Some examples include taking baby pictures, taking wedding pictures, taking pictures of landscapes, photographing people, working in the studio, working out in nature, and many other options. You may prefer to take pictures using film while others may prefer to only take pictures digitally. The options are seemingly endless and it’s up to you to determine which niche you prefer to work in.
Choosing your photography niche should come down to the joy you experience. As an example, if you hate taking wedding photographs then you are not going to be the best photographer at weddings.
That doesn’t mean you can’t necessarily get the job done. But it does mean you’re going to be miserable the entire time and ultimately hate what you do, which could eventually lead to you quitting this field.
On the flipside, if you love taking pictures of newborn babies, you’re going to experience amazing joy and happiness with your work if you focus on this area. This means you’ll love what you do, look forward to it every day, and you’ll be the best newborn baby wedding photographer you can possibly be and your clients will know it.
So consider your joy when choosing your photography niche. This will go a long way in helping you maintain longevity in this field.
Lastly, no one ever said you have to do it all in photography. So if someone finds out that you’re a photographer and asks you to take pictures of their wedding, you can politely decline and tell them that you don’t focus in that area.
On the other hand, there may be a particular type of photography that really isn’t your strong suit and you may not prefer it. So it’s obviously best to avoid working in this niche as well.
Choosing your photography niche does not need to be a difficult and heart wrenching experience. Use the guidance we’ve shared today and you’ll have no trouble discovering your niche in this amazing field.
